There are two ways to tell for sure that fall has arrived here in Brevard County. First, your electric bill goes down as a result of not running the air conditioner 24/7. Second, your calendar starts to fill with fall festivals, Oktoberfests and other great autumn events. Here are our picks for what you should be doing this fall on the Space Coast:
Fall for the Arts
Happening Fri. Oct. 5 from 5 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the Eau Gallie Arts District on Highland Ave., the 5th annual Fall for the Arts street party is a perfect way to kick-off the fall season. Featuring live performances, craft demonstrations and presentations by more than 60 Brevard County arts, cultural and historical organizations, this free, family-friendly community event is sure to please.
Downtown Melbourne Fall Festival
Happening Fri. Oct. 5 through Sun. Oct. 7, the Downtown Melbourne Fall Festival is a three-day live music and art extravaganza. Friday from 6 p.m. to midnight, you can catch artists like Tone Loc and The Supervillians, as well as other well-known regional and national acts for free. On Sat. and Sun. from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., you’ll want to experience the juried fine art and craft show, which features well over 150 artists, artisans and other vendors.
Merritt Island Oktoberfest
Happening Sat. Oct. 6 from 5 p.m. to “late,” the Merritt Island Oktoberfest features two stages of live music, stilt walkers, German food and beer (of course), a stein hold challenge. There’s even a Miss Oktoberfest pageant contest scheduled. It’s just $10 to get in and kids under 12 are free. This street party is being held in the Dogs ‘R Us/Walmart parking area.
Broken Barrel Tavern Oktoberfest
When it comes to beer and food, Broken Barrel owns, so it would be a complete travesty to miss this Palm Bay restaurant’s 4th annual Oktoberfest event. Happening pretty much all day on Oct. 12 and 13, Broken Barrel’s indoor/outdoor autumn celebration includes live entertainment, Brevard County’s best selection of craft beers, and authentic German cuisine.
Viva Brevard Festival
October may be “Halloween month,” but it’s also Hispanic Heritage Month—and that’s something to celebrate! Happening Sat. Oct. 13 from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., the Viva Brevard Festival is part business and community expo, part fiesta. Featuring great Latin food, local folk music and a variety of kids’ activities, this event is being held at Palm Bay Regional Park. Admission is free.
Rods ‘n’ Rockets
From Oct. 12 through the 14th, this traveling car show *slash* space celebration has something for everyone. Whether you’re a motorhead, NASA geek or parent looking for a fun family activity, Rods ‘n’ Rockets won’t disappoint. This year, participants will show their cars at KSC, Port Canaveral and Ron Jon. Every stop features a family fun zone and more.
Scarecrow Stroll and Harvest Festival
Viera businesses have already crafted scarecrows for this event and you can “stroll” through the area and vote for your favorite through Oct. 11. Oct. 13 is the Harvest Festival part of the event, during which all the scarecrows will be on display at Harvest Field and the winner will be announced. The Harvest Festival will include live music, hay rides, and a silent scarecrow auction to benefit the local food bank.
Probably the largest of the Brevard County Oktoberfest events, Melbourne’s has state fair-style rides, a craft beer tasting area featuring over 100 premium brands, and live music on two stages. Melbourne Oktoberfest is happening Oct. 18 through 21, with gates opening Thurs. and Fri. at 5 p.m., Sat. and Sun. at noon. General admission is $6 and kids under 6 get in free. (Rides and Brewfest tasting not included.)
Partners for the Paws: For Pits’ Sake
Anything but a run-of-the-mill autumn happening, this unique event takes place over two days, includes a jazz night and silent auction on animal-themed chair art (7 p.m. to 11 p.m. on Sat. Oct. 20) and a pit bull adoption showcase (noon to 4 p.m. on on Sun. Oct. 21), during which there will also be a gallery showing of local pit bull pop art. Where? Stone Fire Art Studios and Gallery in Titusville.
Space Coast State Fair
It’s only FAIR to include the Space Coast State Fair in this year’s lineup of must-do Brevard County events this fall. It is, after all, its 25th anniversary! Happening Nov. 8 through Nov. 18, the Space Coast State Fair costs $10 or $12 to get in (includes unlimied shows and rides). Depending on the day you go, you could catch the Mr. Space Coast pageant, a hot dog eating contest, or Border Collies sheep herding.
This is in no way a complete list of all the great stuff going on in Brevard County this fall, but you really can’t go wrong with anything on it—particularly if you just love being outdoors and enjoying the cooler weather with great people.
