Dog Friendly Race Invites you to move your “paws” to Save Homeless Pets and Fight Pet Obesity
Everyone knows that obesity in humans is a growing epidemic, but did you know this is a serious problem for our nation’s pet population as well? It is estimated that nearly 54% of pets are overweight or obese, causing them to lose up to 2 years on their natural lifespan. In 2010, Drs. Jen and Paul Sikoski, veterinarians at Palm Bay Animal Clinic and Clearlake Animal Hospital, organized a unique event for dogs and their owners to get active and raise money to help homeless pets in the process. In the last 2 years, participants close to $10,000 to benefit Brevard County Animal Shelters. Please join us again in pulling the community together for the 3rd annual Bayfront 5“K9” Fun Run and Walk to be held on Sunday, December 2, 2012. It will be an exciting opportunity for people to get out with their beloved pets, get some exercise, and raise money for the homeless pets of our community.
There are 2 shelters- the North and South Animal Care Centers located in Titusville and Melbourne. Many people do not realize that these are county run facilities and are in constant need of support. This is especially clear in these hard economic times when many animals are being abandoned by owners who can no long afford their care.
Solo or team runners and walkers, as well as those with their DOGS and children will all be welcome for some friendly competition or just a day to get out and play. There will be a post race gathering and award ceremony in the parking lot of Palm Bay Animal Clinic, providing an excellent opportunity for socializing, networking, getting information about pets available for adoption, and fun for all! Registration forms are available at many locations including Palm Bay Animal Clinic (3970 Dixie Hwy NE, Palm Bay) and Clearlake Animal Hospital (771 Clearlake Rd, Cocoa) and online through www.runningzone.com. Registration is $20 in advance, and $25 the day of the event. Please contact Palm Bay Animal Clinic at (321)-725-4609, ([email protected]) or Race Director Laura Spedick at (321) 751-8890 ([email protected]) if you have any questions.
If bringing your “K9”, please have your pet’s current Brevard County License number ready to register them. (See registration form for complete rules for entry of dogs-you will also need to submit proof of current rabies vaccine from your veterinarian) Special awards will be given to the top 3 dogs in 3 weight classes (small, medium, large)!
