If you were told the exact date and time the world was going to end (let’s say 6pm on May 21, 2011), what would you want to be doing at that moment? For me and a few friends the answer was indulging ourselves in really good food! Well, we didn’t really believe the world was ending, so it was more like an excuse to spend the evening doing whatever we wanted and not feeling guilty for it.
After working up an appetite by strolling the shops for a bit in downtown Melbourne, we headed over to Matt’s Casbah. The architecture and colorful exterior alone make you feel like this is where you want to be. But to be honest I was also a little weary, oftentimes places that look fun or have fun atmosphere’s aren’t always known for great food. Since the world was possibly about to end, we risked it anyways and headed inside.
I don’t even know where to start, the place was huge! We entered through the outside bar and patio area that was as large as some other restaurants, then headed into the first room which had another full size bar. Next was a thinner room with a sushi bar and a smaller closed off dining area, and in the way back was another large dinning area, a bit darker and more intimate. I was impressed with how they’ve brought together several different atmosphere’s into one. They’ve managed to create an environment great for an intimate date night on one end and a post-beach stop on the other and fit a sushi bar in between!
We decided to sit inside in the first room and were promptly greeted by our server. Being a vegetarian, I have to be that annoying person asking ten questions before I can order anything. More often than not my servers have to “run to the back” and find the answers, not at Matt’s Casbah! Our server knew the answer to each question I asked and even went into more detail than what was just needed to answer my questions. For example, she explained to us how each sauce is made “in house”.
For 5 o’clock on a Saturday it seemed surprisingly slow, but considering it was 90 degrees without a single cloud in the sky, I have a guess where everyone might have been. Our food came out very quickly considering how fresh and HOT it was. Once again our server took the time to explain the sauces paired with each of our dishes and even gave us a heads up as to which ones where spicy. Now I had this great intention to take pictures of each dish and post them because pictures can tell it much better than I can say it, but once the food hit the table we all kind of forgot! Let’s just say it looked amazing and tasted better than it looked.
We didn’t get to try everything we wanted to on the menu or anything from the sushi bar; I can’t wait to get back to Matt’s Casbah and try some more!
