The annual Melbourne Independent Filmmakers Festival always has something new and intriguing to offer the Brevard County movie-loving community and this year is no different. Which, if you really think about it, means that it IS.
So, what’s going to be different about MIFF 2012? It’s the “Year of the Dragon!”
Not only does this year actually mark the traditional Chinese “Year of the Dragon,” but festival organizers also believe it is a great opportunity to honor the good work currently being done by Save Dragon Point, a local organization working to resurrect the lost but historic local landmark known as “Annie the Merritt Island River Dragon.” (Brevard Happening hosts the organization’s support form here if you want to show yours.)
“The MIFF is celebrating the “Year of the Dragon” in two ways,” says MIFF founder and program chairman Terry Cronin.
First, the MIFF will debut a music video-style documentary about “Annie” that is being produced by recording artists Robin and Eddy, Save Dragon Point and A Cut Above Video Productions. The video will feature Robin and Eddy’s original song, “Dragon Island,” and will feature community-contributed archival footage and/or stills of the Merritt Island dragon sculpture.
Additionally, the MIFF is hosing a 90-second film contest inspired by film director Michael Baumgarten (Smitty, Pretty Obsession, Wild Roomies) called the Baumgarten Challenge. The theme of this year’s contest? You got it. Year. Of. The. Dragon.
“All submissions to this contest must be about dragons, the year of the dragon, the Merritt Island River Dragon, or some artistic permutation on the dragon theme,” says Cronin. “Entering is fairly easy. We’re asking filmmakers to submit their 90-second film on a DVD for screening and to post it YouTube with the words ‘MIFF Year of the Dragon’ in the description.”
Entries to the “Year of the Dragon” edition of the Baumgarten Challenge must be submitted by Sept. 1, 2012 to:
