In the process of building the site’s calendar I’m learning all sorts of new things to do around Brevard County, and I have been pushing myself to try some of them out. So yesterday morning I checked out the Pilates Center of Viera and tried pilates for the first time.
Now all truth being told, I really had no idea what pilates even was! I had a full day planned and thought I’d give it a try early in the morning, figured I’d be doing a little stretching and such then get on with my day……….not exactly! I got my body rocked! And I’m familiar with exercise, I played sports growing up, have trained for a triathlon, a marathon, and regularly go to the gym to run or hit the weights. And I still got rocked! But not in a crying for my mommy kind of way, more like when you spend the day doing yard work or moving or acting like a fool with kids and the next day you have pain in muscles you never even knew you had. But that’s kind of the best part! During the pilates workout it never really felt like a workout. Yeah, some exercises pushed me, but in more of short- bursts instead of long daunting workouts. Honestly, it was some of the most fun I’ve had working out. The owner of the studio and trainer I worked with, Amy, knew exactly how to do each exercise for optimal gain and had the perfect balance between pushing you harder and supporting you through each exercise.
So pilates was nothing at all as I expected it to be. It was an amazing workout for my body and it was fun, but what I’m still most amazed about is what condition I was in when I arrived there yesterday morning and how I left. When I woke up I felt the onset of a head cold and last week was an unusually stressful week, so my shoulders were tense and tight. Of course I ran through an abundance of excuses I could use to skip the session and go back to sleep, but the thought of someone getting to work at 7am on a Saturday morning for no reason forced me out of bed, and I am very thankful for that! Yesterday after the sessions I couldn’t believe how relaxed my shoulders were and how clear my head was. Now I’m not saying pilates cured my cold or took care of all the stressful things in my life, I wish! But the workout did do an amazing job of working out the tension and congestion in my muscles and body.
Now after just one workout, I don’t think I’ll be dropping my gym routine and switching to just pilates, but I do think it could be a great addition to my current workout and maybe even replace one of my days in the gym. So I’ll start with trying to make it to one mat class a week and see if it grows from there.
If you’re intersted in trying pilates for yourself I’ve added the Pilates Center of Viera‘s mat class to the calender or you can contact Amy @ 321-305-6950 for a private session.
